Therapy for Women
Helping women work through and overcome unique gender specific challenges for a more fulfilling and empowered life.
“A woman who is starved for her real soul-life may look ‘cleaned up and combed’ on the outside, but on the inside she is filled with dozens of pleading hands and empty mouths.” — Clarissa Pinkola Estés
Why would I need therapy specific to women?
Women experience depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress at higher rates than men. Therapy specific to women’s issues can be helpful in addressing cultural and social constraints that women often face. This type of therapy will focus on advocating, empowering and supporting women through addressing gender constructs, shifting roles, emotional wellbeing and rest. I work with women to learn to identify and assert their mental, physical and emotional needs as often we have been taught to put others first. Many women may not even know what their needs are due to the prioritization of others.
I will encourage and empower you to begin to create a life that is aligned with your passions, desires, and purpose. A woman’s identity is often tied to expectations of others, meeting other’s needs and prioritizing everyone other than the self. Women end up internalizing these aspects which can impact our self esteem and self worth. I work to help connect to your true values and deconstruct any unhealthy expectations, rules, or judgments that you may have internalized.
You may have entered a new life transition and what used to work no longer feels like it is working. Maybe you’ve realized some things are more important to you than before. Or maybe there are outdated beliefs or values that you are not quite sure what to do with.
Women can often experience feelings of guilt, doubt and shame when they are going through identity transitions as it can challenge or disrupt previous expectations that were placed on them due to societal, family or relationship systems.
Discovering who you are and what you stand for is important because it can impact feelings of self worth, confidence, and motivation. Part of this work will be exploring beliefs and expectations that are no longer working for you. And finally having the space to explore what is possible.
Some life transitions can include:
Grief and loss
Moving to a new place or location
Breaking up or starting a new relationship
Starting or ending a career
Having a baby, feeling uncertain or undecided about having children, deciding to not have children, or infertility
Changes with your body
Changing religious or spiritual beliefs
Changes in how you feel sexually or feeling uncertain about your sexuality
“Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing.”
— Clarissa Pinkola Estés
